According to institutional research results, students enrolled in NCYU through the General Scholastic Ability Test (GSAT) or Advanced Subjects Test (AST) are ranked in the upper-middle level of all students in Taiwan. Although their overall performance is generally good, the dropout rate due to incompatible interest and academic performance was slightly higher between the academic years of 2015 and 2017. Based on this, NCYU has proposed corresponding strategies to enhance our students' self-confidence, to cultivate independent learning ability, to establish a positive learning attitude, and to increase professional knowledge and preparation for the future workplace. Therefore, we are focused on innovation and improvement of teaching to cultivate talented graduates empowered with innovative problem-solving capabilities.
In response to recent challenges posed by COVID-19, NCYU has been inspired to initiate key driving forces for change. The Sustainable Development Goals environmental program of the United Nations has pointed out that sustainable resources and a healthy ecological environment are fundamental conditions for supporting economic growth and a solid social foundation. The mid-term development project of NCYU is closely aligned to an SDG model. By re-evaluating and redefining our teaching system and students' learning effectiveness, as well as actively developing and integrating the dual features of agriculture and education, we hope to help students lay a solid foundation of sustainable ecology combined with a healthy ecological environment, and thus improve our society and continue to maintain a sustainable economy in the future.
In the second stage of this part, we will continue to follow up and refine the strategies of first stage, in order to improve the establishment and management of our institutional research data. Moreover, aiming to popularize information education, we have increased lectures on programming, Maker, and information on public welfare for more students of non-information-and-communication-fields as well as community residents. In addition, every student association and club will have their special achievements displayed both on and off campus, including the Chiayi Children's Welfare Service Center. This is in order to promote local science education and to increase knowledge of popular science among the general public. At the same time, we aim to introduce professional off-campus instructors to continuously promote more interdisciplinary courses, and to cooperate with the 5+2 Innovative Industries Program of the government, in order to cultivate talents of sustainable development and to carry out the university's broad range of social responsibilities.
